School Policy on Homework

It is school policy that students from Year 1 onwards are given regular formal homework. Homework given is to be meaningful and appropriate to the child’s age and level of ability.

The School’s Vision and Mission and Homework Policy will be achieved through corporate acceptance of the following Principles

  1. Homework is another strategy by which students can further develop their God given gifts and abilities.
  2. Homework that is meaningful can include: practicing work learnt in class (including reading and writing), making summaries, preparing for tests and completing research and other projects.
  3. Parents’ role in completion of homework is to:

·        encourage students to complete work to the best of their ability,

·        monitor the quality of homework their children are achieving,

·        provide a suitable place where students can quietly concentrate on their work,

·        give feedback to staff if their child finds difficulty with homework.

  1. Student’s role in the completion of homework is to:

·        complete work set to the best of their ability,

·        be consistent in the completion of work,

·        hand in work on the due date.

  1. The school’s role in the completion of homework is to:

·        give homework that is meaningful and at the child’s level of ability,

·        mark all homework,

·        follow up students who consistently do not complete homework,

·        give appropriate feedback to parents,

·        respond to parents’ legitimate concerns about homework matters affecting their children.

  1. The level of homework given to each Year group should approximate the following:

Infants-Primary:   Kindergarten: No formal homework is set but parents should spend time reading stories to their children each evening.

Year 1-2: 20 minutes recommended including 10 minutes reading.

Years 3-4: 30 minutes recommended including 10 minutes reading.

Years 5-6: 40 minutes recommended including 10 minutes reading.

High School: Years 7 & 8: 20 minutes per subject per night for the numbers of subjects the student studies during the day or the equivalent of this amount over the full week

Years 9 & 10: 30 minutes per subject per night or the equivalent of this amount over the full week.

Note: High school times may need to be extended as examinations and assessment task deadlines approach.
