The approaches to discipline at Bethel Christian School are based on Biblical principles (God’s Word) and are consistent with expectations of a Christian home.

Discipline is often considered solely in its negative context, but at Bethel is seen in rather a broader light as "the nurture and development of individuality and character through admonition, example, challenge and correction".

We expect each student at B.C.S. will learn to display character fruits of discipline such as -

Children are under authority from a number of sources including God, parents, teachers, the government and the school.

The Bible teaches that all authority is delegated from God and so we are all accountable to God for our response to authority.

Ephesians 6:4 "And you fathers, do not provoke your children to anger but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord."

"Nurture" implies the total upbringing and welfare of the child including education, training, instruction, punishment and protecting. Also "admonition" implies counselling, encouraging, warning, training and establishing right values. With the above as the underlying principles of Bethel Christian Academy, its task is to support parents in providing a extension to the Christian home and encourage development of a personal relationship between the individual and God. Teachers have an obligation towards students, parents and themselves to use various measures in correcting inappropriate attitudes and behaviour. The type of action will depend on the student’s age and the seriousness of the incident.

Actions may include warning, reprimand, detention, behaviour cards, suspension or expulsion. Where physical damage to property has occurred then restitution of any damage will be required.

Use of narcotic substances and alcohol by a student at school, or in transit may necessitate expulsion, or at the least, suspension. Smoking at school or in transit is seen as unacceptable and will also mean a severe punishment.

In most cases the classroom teacher is in the best position to take action which demonstrates to the student the Academy’s expectations. Staff are encouraged to discuss behavioural matters with the student concerned and where possible pray with the student. In serious incidents parents are notified by telephone or letter to ensure the close co-operation between the school and home is maintained.

General nurture and discipline directions are indicated in the school’s Discipline Policy document.
